EAST SIDE STORY

A Store of His Own

In 1973 Eli Zabar went into business on his own. His first shop, E.A.T. on Madison Avenue, was a grab-and-go neighborhood café, and to this day is a showcase for Eli’s original ideas, his attention to detail, and his careful thinking about how to refine a recipe. The ideas generated over 40 years at E.A.T. have become hallmarks of all of his shops and restaurants.

MADISON AVENUE

A Beloved Neighborhood Institution

E.A.T. remains a quintessential New York eatery. Loved for its overstuffed sandwiches on very thin, very good bread; the iconic “Tower of Bagel”; salads made carefully, in small batches, several times a day; flaky breakfast pastries, jelly doughnuts, New York’s best brownie and thinnest chocolate chip cookie; and freshly roasted coffee. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner finds E.A.T. full of a polyglot mix of locals and tourists all sitting down to their E.A.T. favorites, whether it’s matzo ball soup or a caviar omelet.

CATERING

Party Time

When the Metropolitan Museum of Art is having a blockbuster exhibition the second floor at E.A.T is often used for the overflow lunch crowd. It’s a lovely sun filled space in E.A.T.’s traditional black and white color scheme and it cleans up nicely for a party. Often booked for private Sunday brunches and ladies lunches, it works equally well for cocktails and dinner and has been the site of some memorable children’s parties.
